Intriguing Possibilities

Some of these candidates aren't coming to Purdue because they're extremely overqualified, some of them aren't coming to Purdue because they're extremely underqualified, and some of these candidates (read: Willie Taggart) are juuuust right.

Willie Taggart, USF HC

Taggart is young, has an extremely dynamic offensive system, has undergone successful recruiting-driven rebuilds at Western Kentucky and South Florida, and has extensive Midwest connections. Taggart would be a home-run hire for Purdue.

Tier 2 candidate

Scott Frost, UCF HC

Frost is a wonderful coach with a fantastic offensive mind, and he's absolutely not going to come to Purdue in 2017. But this is our website and we like him a lot, so we wrote about him.

Tier 1 candidate

Scottie Montgomery, ECU HC

I'm buying all the Scottie Montgomery stock I can get my hands on, because even though he's barely got any HC experience I'd bet on him being a very good high major coach.

Tier 3 candidate

Doug Meacham, TCU OC

He's a brilliant offensive mind, and is approaching the crossroads of being a permanent OC or taking a lower level coaching job. Would he be a good fit at Purdue?

Tier 3 candidate

Mike Sanford Jr, ND OC

Notre Dame's current OC Mike Sanford was, until this disastrous season, a rising star among Midwest assistant coaches. He'll certainly get a Purdue look.

Tier 4 candidate

Joe Moglia, Coastal Carolina HC

The former CEO of TD Ameritrade is now a football head coach. Seriously, this guy is pretty much living the dream.

Tier 4 candidate

Bryan Harsin, Boise State HC

Again, we're well aware that there's essentially no chance Harsin ends up in West Lafayette next year. But if you're looking for the next generation of great offensive coaches, we've got a candidate right here.

Tier 1 candidate

Scott Satterfield, App State HC

Appalachian State's head coach needs a few more years before some high major offers roll around, but he's definitely on the right path. Like Scottie Montgomery, he'll be at a Power 5 job within the decade.

Tier 4 candidate

Philip Montgomery, Tulsa HC

Baylor's old OC and Tulsa's current HC is considered an eventual high-major head coaching candidate. Would he move north, and does he own a winter coat?

Tier 4 candidate

Skip Holtz, LA Tech HC

Lou's kid Skip has been a head coach for a lot longer than you think he has. Does Little Holtz have the right resume for Purdue? (Spoiler Alert: Nah.)

Tier 3 candidate

Bob Shoop, Tennessee DC

Middle aged, no HC experience, and a last name that will make Purdue fans gag. Who said we couldn't have a little fun this week?

Tier 5 candidate
