Purdue’s New Pastime?
Although many of you are looking ahead to football season as the Spring comes to a close, don’t put away your Purdue spirit until fall. The baseball team is pretty darned good if you haven’t heard, and by good, I mean they could probably beat the Pittsburgh Pirates...but that’s not saying much.
The Boilers are ranked 16
th in the nation and have been making a run through the Big Ten so hard, that you can hear the screams for mercy.
Purdue's pitching rotation is strong; with the three starters, Lance Breedlove, Blake Mascarello, and Joe Hasse, who have a combined record of 18-3 on the season...pretty impressive. If only the Cubs had that kind of pitching, we wouldn’t have to hear whining all the time.
The team has 8 fielders batting over .300 and can score in bunches, just ask Ball State (
High School) who got beaten 15-2 the other day.
I guess what I’m really saying here is if you haven’t started paying attention to Purdue Baseball yet, you should start now. Being 28-5 overall, and 10-2 in conference play, this team is doing big things, and is definitely looking for a spot in the College World Series.
At 15
th in the nation, and coming out of the North, it’s difficult to see them winning it all. But with a little luck and improvement, this team has an outside shot. With the season going into early June, it will definitely give you something to do while you sit around and wonder if Danny Hope can get it together this season. Even if you haven't done it since you were a kid, you might as well watch America’s pastime.
If you have unlimited funds to work with (
and who doesn't), you might want to consider heading out to California for the series against the 11
th ranked Bruins of UCLA. If not though, there are still plenty of home games coming up to get to West Lafayette for...and good seats are still available.
It’s definitely an exciting time for Purdue Baseball, and with such a hot start; this team is looking to carry the momentum into the postseason and beyond. If you haven’t watched college baseball before, this is a great chance to start and support your Boilermakers.
The team is next in action at Lincoln, Nebraska from 4/20 to 4/22.
