Blough Officially a Boiler
Unlike a verbal, a signed letter of intent is truly a binding agreement...David Blough, a 6'1" 187lb. QB from Carrollton, TX became the first Boiler in the class of 2014 on Monday afternoon. He'll enroll in January, as did Danny Etling a year ago.
To be fair, Blough's verbal agreement was as solid as stone...just like Etling and Appleby's. All three of these guys verbally committed to Purdue, did a bit of recruiting prior to signing day and then signed as they promised.
Also like the other two Boiler QBs, Blough is an Elite 11 QB. Etling, Appleby and Blough give Purdue three highly-touted, young QBs in the stable heading into the Spring. Etling, of course, would be the clear leader as Hazell and Shoop both think he will be the guy to lead Purdue out of the cellar...but I would hope there is still an open competition during this Spring and Fall to decide who will be starting in the fall. While Etling's final start versus IU showed that he has the ability to put up BIG numbers, his winless record as a starter makes him a bit less than a shoe-in. My hope is that Blough can redshirt and put a few years of eligibility between the Sophomores-to-be, Etling and Appleby.
After reading a lot about all three and meeting two of the QBs in Purdue's current stable, it's kind of tough to root against any of them. Recruiting magazines liked them...and they all look like they have lively arms, strong work ethics and are students of the game (as well as pretty good student-students). May the best man win...and in turn, may their Boilers do the same again and again.
We'll all get to know Blough a bit better in the coming months.
